Everything You Need to Know About REAL ID

Navigating the world of travel and identification requirements can be confusing, but understanding REAL ID is essential for your future travel plans. Here, we break down everything you need to know about this federally accepted form of identification and why it matters.

What Is REAL ID?
REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license or identification card that meets minimum security standards set by the federal government. These standards were established to make identity verification more secure and consistent across all states. While upgrading to a REAL ID is optional, it is highly recommended for anyone planning to fly domestically or access certain federal facilities.

Why Is REAL ID Important?
The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 in response to the need for stronger identity verification and security measures. This legislation established consistent standards for state-issued IDs, ensuring they are more difficult to forge and easier to verify.

Starting May 7, 2025, you will need a REAL ID or another form of acceptable identification, such as a passport, to:
•    Board domestic flights within the United States.
•    Enter certain federal facilities, such as military bases and federal courthouses.

Without a REAL ID, you could face significant disruptions to your travel or access plans.

What Does a REAL ID Look Like?
It’s easy to identify a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID card. Here are the key features:
•    Star Icon: Look for a star in the upper right corner of your card. This indicates that the ID meets federal REAL ID standards.
•    Non-REAL ID Marking: If your ID is not REAL ID-compliant, it will clearly state “NOT FOR REAL ID ACT PURPOSES” on the front.

How to Get a REAL ID
Obtaining a REAL ID involves visiting your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and providing specific documentation to verify your identity, Social Security number, and residency. Requirements may vary slightly by state, so check your state’s DMV website for details.

Why Upgrade Now?
Although May 7, 2025, might seem far away, it’s best to upgrade to a REAL ID sooner rather than later. DMV offices often experience long wait times as deadlines approach, and planning ahead ensures you’re ready for future travel and access needs.

Final Thoughts
A REAL ID is a small upgrade that makes a big difference in your ability to travel and access secure facilities. Don’t let the new requirements catch you off guard. Take the time to check your ID today and make the necessary updates to ensure smooth travels tomorrow.

Smooth Sailing Through Security: The Benefits of TSA Pre-check and CLEAR

Are you tired of waiting in long lines at airport security checkpoints? Do you dread the hassle of removing your shoes, belts, and laptops every time you travel? If so, TSA Pre-check and CLEAR might just be the solutions for which you’ve been searching. In this blog post, we'll explore the advantages of these expedited security programs and how you can easily obtain them.

TSA Pre-check: Streamlined Security Screening
TSA Pre-check is a program that allows travelers to enjoy expedited screening at participating airports across the United States. With TSA Pre-check, you can breeze through security without having to remove your shoes, belts, or light jackets. Additionally, you can leave your laptop and liquids in your carry-on bag, saving you time and hassle.

To obtain TSA Pre-check, simply follow these steps:
1.    Apply Online: Visit the TSA Pre-check website and fill out the online application. You'll need to provide personal information and undergo a background check.
2.    Schedule an Appointment: After submitting your application, you'll need to schedule an appointment at a TSA Pre-check enrollment center. I handled getting my Known Traveler Number at Staples. However, there are other enrollment centers. Click the link below. During your appointment, you'll be fingerprinted and interviewed by a TSA agent.
3.    Receive Your Known Traveler Number (KTN): Once your application is approved, you'll receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) via email. This number is valid for five years and can be used when booking flights to access TSA Pre-check lanes.

CLEAR: Speedy Security with Biometric Technology
CLEAR is a biometric security program that uses advanced technology to verify your identity and expedite the security screening process. With CLEAR, you can skip the line and head straight to the front of the security checkpoint, where a CLEAR ambassador will assist you through the screening process.

To sign up for CLEAR, follow these simple steps:
1.    Enroll Online or at the Airport - You can enroll in CLEAR online or at select airports and stadiums. During the enrollment process, you'll need to provide biometric information, such as your fingerprints and iris scans.
2.    Verify Your Identity: After enrolling, you'll need to visit a CLEAR enrollment center to verify your identity in person. This typically involves a brief interview and the scanning of your biometric data.
3.    Start Using CLEAR: Once your identity is verified, you can start using CLEAR immediately. Simply scan your boarding pass and biometrics at a CLEAR kiosk to bypass the security line.

Credit Cards with TSA Pre-check and CLEAR Credits
Many credit cards offer statement credits or reimbursement for TSA Pre-check and CLEAR membership fees as part of their travel benefits. Some popular credit cards with these perks include:

•    Chase Sapphire Reserve
•    The Platinum Card® from American Express
•    Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®
•    United℠ Explorer Card

Be sure to check the terms and conditions of your credit card to see if it offers credit toward TSA Pre-check and CLEAR, as well as any other travel-related benefits.

In conclusion, TSA Pre-check and CLEAR offer invaluable benefits for travelers looking to streamline the airport security process. With expedited screening and biometric technology, you can spend less time in line and more time enjoying your journey. So why wait? Sign up for TSA Pre-check and CLEAR today and experience the convenience of hassle-free travel.

Unforeseen Connections: A Heartwarming Encounter on the Road

by Lolita Smith
During a recent family trip to Texas, we made a stopover in Arkansas. One Wednesday night, we attended bible class at a local church. This night would leave us with a memory that would forever be etched in our hearts.

Back story: Our daughters were learning American Sign Language (ASL). As we were finding a place to sit, our youngest daughter, known for her natural warmth and boundless curiosity, gravitated towards another little person in the congregation.

Those familiar with our youngest are well acquainted with her magnetic charm and unwavering affection for all she encounters. To my surprise, it quickly became apparent that the young girl my daughter approached was hearing impaired. Undeterred by the communication barriers, our daughter, affectionately referred to as A, eagerly attempted to connect with her newfound friend using the ASL she had diligently been mastering.

This encounter epitomizes why we cherish our travels. Not only do we revel in the opportunity to meet new faces, but it's moments like these that strengthen bonds and create unforgettable memories wherever our adventures lead us. Moreover, traveling serves as a gateway to exposing ourselves and our children to diverse cultures and perspectives, fostering personal growth and broadening our horizons with each interaction.

In essence, during our family excursion to Texas, an impromptu visit to an Arkansas church resulted in a heartwarming encounter where our daughter's ASL skills bridged communication barriers, highlighting the transformative impact of travel in forging connections and crafting cherished moments.

My Cruise to Cozumel

By Victoria Hairston

The Teen Lounge!
When I first went to the teen lounge, I saw a box of video games and table tennis with four paddles. Everyone was super friendly and incredibly fun. I met three new friends over time and had the best time ever in the lounge. When walking around the ship two teen girls ran into me and told me about the funny things that happened at the lounge.

The competitions at the teen lounge!
There are ten competitions that you can participate in, and when you win a contest, you get a gold or silver medal. The competitions consist of fireball, foosball, and a Just Dance competition and more. On the last day there was Harry Potter trivia and after the trivia match the winner would get a lanyard. Then all the kids would get pizza at the Promenade. While talking sometimes the teens would go exchange numbers or e-mail addresses and talk about all the crazy stuff that happened at the teen lounge.

The amazing food I had on the cruise!
While on the cruise there was so much amazing food that my eyes could not even figure out what to eat first. The food was so delicious. The first day when we got breakfast, I went up to the Windjammer to eat. There were so many different options that it was so hard to choose what to eat. They had fruit, waffles, and pancakes. They even had vegetarian options. All the employees were so nice and sweet, and they even cleaned the table when you asked. On the last day we went to the dining room for the first time for dinner. The staff were so nice, and they even had a parking spot for walkers and buggies for my grandma. Once again, the  food was delicious. The staff performed a show in the middle of dinner with all the chefs walking down the stairs and everyone waved their napkins in the air. It was so funny. If you do plan to go on vacation on a Royal Caribbean cruise, I do recommend The Windjammer, The Promenade, Giovanni’s Table (Italian), the dining room, and Sugar Beach Ice Cream Shop.

Preparing for Winter Travel

By Sheldon Smith

During this holiday season, many of us are planning trips to go see family or spend time with friends. The winter weather outlook predicts a wetter south and a warmer north, and there will be plenty of opportunities for severe weather. That’s why we encourage our travelers to plan extra time into your itinerary to accommodate canceled or delayed flights.

Make sure to book your travel with a credit card that offers trip delay, or cancellation and interruption insurance. Trip delay insurance will protect you from expenses incurred because of flight delays. The benefit of trip cancellation and interruption insurance is its ability to cover non-refundable expenses that result from unforeseen circumstances that impact your travel plans. When booking cruises or resort destinations, we highly recommend that you use travel insurance benefits available through your card or purchase travel insurance.

Monitor the weather forecast. Severe weather that impacts your travel will likely result in ground stops which could lead to delays. Significant weather impacts can have devastating effects on aircraft and crew schedules, and often result in cancellations.
If you plan to drive, weather forecasts should play an important role in your routes and timing. A couple of years ago, when returning from Texas with my family, my original plan was to leave my point of origin and stop in Mississippi for the night. The next day, I planned to take a route through Tennessee into Western Virginia. But, during our overnight stop in Mississippi, I saw a weather forecast that had winter storm warnings along our planned route of travel. That provided an opportunity to shift our route south and east.

We made it home a day before a historic ice storm hit our area that resulted in significant downed trees and a catastrophic impact on our power system that took weeks to repair. In fact, trees came down across my driveway that took days to clear. So, being informed of the weather allowed me to make some smart decisions that kept my family and me safe.

Here are some preparedness tips from Ready.gov to consider.
•    From blizzards, to avalanches, to ice storms, be aware of the winter risks in places you visit. Check the local weather forecasts and warnings before heading out. Visit National Weather Service for up to date forecasts and download the FEMA App for alerts in up to five locations.
•    Check your local weather and traffic reports before heading out.
•    If your roads are not in good shape, consider postponing non-essential travel until the roads are cleared. If you do have to go out, make sure you are prepared in case you become delayed while traveling.
•    Tell others your route and anticipated arrival time.
•    Want more tips on travel safety? Watch this PSA, made in partnership with FEMA and the TSA, for additional tips on travel safety.
I know this post was rather long but hope it will benefit some of you in your holiday journeys.

Happy holidays and safe travels!

Tips for the International Traveler

October 19, 2023

By Ruth Branson
You are finally doing it! You saved your nickels and you’re ready to take that trip you have been planning and dreaming of congratulations! Before you fly or sail off into the wild blue yonder there are a few things you may want to consider whether you are a seasoned traveler or a novice. The seven tips below may save you some time or money, prevent travel frustrations, and allow your trip to be enjoyable and carefree. So, let’s jump right in!
1. Long before you decide where you want to go, apply for your passport if you don’t have one already. Passport processing times vary depending on seasonal demand and can take up to 13 weeks or more. Don’t pay for a trip only to have it spoiled by not getting your passport back in time. If you already have a passport, check the expiration date. Some countries require that your passport be valid not only for the expected duration of your trip but also for 3-6 months beyond your return date so that you are covered in the event your return is delayed. Also, make sure that your passport has at least 4 blank pages, more if you are traveling to multiple countries. Some countries will not place their entry/exit stamps on pages that have already been stamped by other countries even if there is sufficient space to do so.
2. If you are traveling to a country that requires a visa, contact the embassy of that country to determine application time and requirements. Many countries do not require a visa for U.S. citizens if you will be in the country for short periods of time. You can go to the Country Information Sheet in the International Travel section on the travel.state.gov website and type in your destination country to obtain visa information for each country to which you will be traveling.
3. Do your research! The Country Information Sheets mentioned above also contain valuable information such as Travel Advisories & Travel Alerts, visa requirements, safety & security information, local laws, entry/exit requirements, and much more for each country in the world. Additionally, each Country Information Sheet has contact information for the U.S. embassy and consulates in the countries to which you are traveling.
4. It is highly recommended that you purchase travel insurance for your international trip. In many countries doctors and hospitals require payment prior to treatment and it is unlikely that your domestic insurance will cover you abroad. Should you be seriously injured abroad and require a medical evacuation (medevac) flight back home or to a country where your injuries can be adequately addressed, the cost will be astronomical. A medevac flight from the Caribbean can cost upwards of $15,000 and over $100,000 from Africa, Europe, Asia, or the Middle East. The insurance is relatively inexpensive and there are many reputable companies that offer it.
5. It is wise to enroll in the U.S. Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. Once you create an account and enroll you will receive information about your country of travel and any Travel Warnings or Security Alerts. The embassy or consulate in country will be able to reach you and/or your designated contact to offer assistance in the event of emergencies such as political unrest or a natural disaster while traveling abroad.
6. In the event your passport is lost or stolen you can apply for a temporary passport at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. You should make a copy of the passport photo and visa pages and put them in your luggage, room safe, or other place separate from the original. You may want to carry an additional copy on your person. Be aware that some countries require you to carry your original passport at all times.
7. Always be vigilant and guard your belongings at all times. Under no circumstances should you agree to carry anything back to the U.S. or to another country for anyone. Countless U.S travelers have done so only to discover they have unknowingly accepted illegal drugs or other illegal items and have been imprisoned abroad. Sentences for drug trafficking abroad are often lengthy and, in some countries, the penalty is execution. Ignorance is no excuse and there is very little the U.S. government can do for you in these situations.
I hope your trip is packed with delight and adventure and will provide you pleasant memories to look back on for years to come. Bon Voyage!

Internet Connectivity on Cruise Ships

September 28, 2023
By Lolita Smith

A few years ago, internet while underway was pretty much non-existent. Today, with the advent of advanced and more affordable satellite technology (thanks to Elon Musk and StarLink), ships can offer sufficient internet service to allow for text and voice calls, social media updates, and other functions.

Additionally, many phone companies have more affordable roaming plans that allow you to remain in touch with loved ones while away. Of course, such a blessing can also be a curse as our main purpose for going on a cruise is to get away from work, relax and forget the stress of our daily lives.
If you need to stay connected while you cruise, consider a pre-pay option for internet.  Below are some examples of internet plans.

Photo Packages
September 21, 2023
By Sheldon Smith

At Smith-Hairston Travel, we believe that travel has the power to broaden minds, foster cultural exchange, and create lifelong memories. And there’s no better way to capture such memories than to purchase a picture package from the cruise line.

Most cruise lines offer onboard photography and have trained and well-equipped photographers seemingly everywhere from the cruise terminal to ship events to disembarkation points at ports of call. In fact, opportunities exist until the last day of the cruise to get some stunning and memorable snapshots. So, when onboard photographers offer to take your picture, let them. It won’t cost you a thing unless you decide to buy the photo.

Although you can purchase photos taken on the ship individually, some may find the photo packages advantageous as you can document your fun without having to worry about carrying a camera or making sure your cell phone camera lens is clean (we’ve all seen those cloudy smartphone pictures). In short, photo packages take the work out of your fun.

So, when you see cruise photographers asking if you want them to take your picture, just say yes to the opportunity to capture lasting memories.
Royal Caribbean Blog - Photo Packages does a wonderful job explaining photo packages and can help you decide if they are worth it for you and your family or group.

Shore Excursions

September 13, 2023

We recently completed a three-day journey to Bimini, Bahamas, on the Carnival Liberty cruise ship. The trip was part of a reunion of 143d Expeditionary Sustainment Command members from various periods in the organization’s history. Although we didn’t plan this cruise, each outing is an opportunity to learn more that will benefit our clients — especially those who are interested in doing group cruises.

Each cruise for us is an opportunity to learn lessons and gather ideas that we think can help our cruise family. This post is the first of a series that will discuss the following topics:

•    Shore Excursions
•    Picture Packages
•    Internet and Phone Connectivity
•    Things to Bring
•    The Cruise App
•    Group Travel Tips

This Week's Post
By Sheldon abd Lolita Smith

Part of what makes a cruise such an incredible value is the opportunity to experience the culture at ports of call through excursions. You can purchase such excursions well before you sail, and we recommend that you do so because there is no guarantee that slots will be available the closer you get to the sail date. If you purchase excursions pre sail, your room attendant will deliver them to your stateroom.

When you arrive at any port, you will likely find people waiting to take you on a tour. We paid a local islander to take us on a tour of Nassau. We visited several sites, including a high point that offered a breath-taking view of the seaside community. We even had an opportunity to purchase some rum cake at the end of our tour. The excursion worked out well, but that might not always be the case. Therefore, it’s important to know the difference between sanctioned and unsanctioned cruises.

Sanctioned excursions are tours that you can purchase within your cruise manager. These excursions have been vetted and your payment is secure. Unsanctioned excursions are tours that you purchase from the locals on the island and have not been vetted. Rule of thumb, if the excursions are not listed within your cruise manager, it has not been vetted. This topic is worth an entire blog post by itself.
When disembarking at your ports of call, there are basic items you’ll need before leaving the ship. You’ll need your cruise card as well as an acceptable government-issued identification card or passport. We’ll do a future post on the differences between a driver's license or state non-driver ID card, a passport, or a passport card. It’s best to keep your ID and cruise card on you at all times when you leave the ship. At most ports of call in North and Central America, and the Caribbean, a birth certificate and state-issued ID, or a passport card alone will suffice, but locations beyond will require a passport.

We also strongly recommend that you take cash and a credit card that offers no foreign transaction fees. We don’t recommend debit cards because they don’t offer the same level of protection in the event of loss or theft as do credit cards. Cash is king for many of the vendors who don’t take cards for services and gratuities. If you want to rent a golf cart or be driven on a tour by one of the locals, you won’t be able to use your credit card. We found this to be true when we arrived at Bimini.

There are some brick-and-mortar shops that accept credit cards, but not all have tap-and-pay capability. So, relying on your phone to make purchases is not a good idea. While on the ship, the cruise card serves as both your money and identification. It would be prudent to add your credit card to your cruise manager so that all charges will be charged to your card. Therefore, you will be able to manage spending in the Account Summary area within the cruise manager.

Finally, we want to discuss precautions everyone should take when going ashore on hot, sunny days. Although you may be surrounded by water, dehydration is a real danger. Cruisers should ensure they hydrate before disembarking and continue to hydrate throughout their excursions. One would think sunscreen would be a no-brainer, but even darker skinned people who are not conditioned to the sun can be susceptible to skin-damaging sunburn. In addition to sunscreen, we recommend wearing protective clothing. Hats in addition to shirts or blouses with sleeves that are made of light-colored, breathable material can keep you stylish and protected.

If you plan on doing other activities like jet skis or just frolicking in the surf, water shoes are a good choice to protect your feet in and out of the water, although they don’t offer much arch support.

Our Voyage to Cozumel

August 31, 2023
By Lolita Smith

Our second cruise was a getaway for my husband and me. We sailed from the Port of Miami to Cozumel, Mexico by way of Key West, Fla.  This was by far the best cruise for me to date. We had a balcony to enjoy the views on this cruise. Although there were food choices that came with the price of the cruise, we chose to dine in one of the restaurants. Dining in the main dining room is very exciting and entertaining – a special experience. My husband was even able to take advantage of Karaoke, which he loves.

Some of the excursions that we took advantage of were snorkeling, Buggy ride, and tour of tour of a Mayan village where I helped cook an authentic meal prepared by one of the locals. The lady of the house showed us the ceremonial “Day of the Dead” (Dia de Muertos) shrine. We went inside one of the oldest churches, that is still being used, in the area. We had a tour guide that we followed in our own little red buggy throughout Cozumel (glad my husband knows how to drive a stick shift). We ended with snorkeling and eating fish tacos. Although we don’t drink, we even toured a little factory that made Tequila.

If you’re interested in a similar experience, please contact me and we’ll start building a cruise package for you, your family or group.
